10 Days Kenya magic Kenya tour toke your lake turkana, lake baring, chalbi desert, marsabit, samburu and ol pejeta tour

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Baringo

Pick up and depart at leisure from Nairobi as we proceed towards the Great Rift Valley. We stop at the view point where you have a chance to enjoy the distant views of Longonot and Suswa (great on clear days). Lunch en route before arriving to set up camp on the shores of Lake Baringo where we spend the night at a campsite sleeping amongst the grazing hippos. Lake Baringo is the most Northerly of Kenya’s small Rift Valley lakes; creased with papyrus and well developed acacia forest. Hippos, crocodiles and monitor lizards, numerous birds are effortlessly seen from the shore.

Day 2: Lake Baringo to Maralal

We awaken for an early morning boat ride in search of hippo, crocodile and numerous bird species before settling down for breakfast. You may even spot the unique Njemps tribe fishing in their traditional boats (Baringo is their traditional home). Break up camp and depart towards Maralal town where we spend the night (cold). Maralal is the unofficial capital of the Samburu people and has a distinctly frontier feel about it.

Day 3:  Maralal to Tuum

After an early breakfast we break up camp and depart further northwards towards the settlement of Tuum which is located on the East of Mount Nyiro. This is a scenic drive and we stop en route to enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon we meet our camels and Samburu guides in these breath-taking landscapes and enjoy a walk for a few hours to the foothills of Mt. Nyiro where you set a bush camp together with the guides and camels.

Day 4: Tuum Camel safari

After breakfast we have an early morning walk in the cool and spectacular African sunrise before repacking the vehicle and departing on the scenic (albeit rocky) road through lava flows to the broken sands on the edge of the Kaisut Desert. We approach Lake Turkana via the small settlement of Baragoi and arrive at Loiyangalani town located on the edge of the lake (It is the largest desert lake in the world and extends for 288 kilometres up to the Ethiopian / Kenyan border surrounded by volcanic rock and desert).

We arrive at a campsite in Loiyangalani in the afternoon and set up tents. A perfect place to relax protected from the scorching sun and heat characteristic of the climate of this remote area. There is the option to upgrade to cool traditional bandas complete with beds (at an additional cost).

Day 5: Lake Turkana

The day is spent relaxing. Optional activities (payable direct) include visiting the Desert museum, enjoying a swim at the nearby lodge, hire a boat, visit to nearby rock art sites (accompanied by guide), visit to Turkana and El molo villages and exploration of Loyangalani town by foot.

Day 6:  Lake Turkana to Kalacha

Early breakfast as we break up camp and prepare to cross the outskirts, of the Chalbi Desert transiting the North Horr settlement, as we approach Kalacha. This is a small settlement located on the edge of the Chalbi Desert inhabited by the Gabbra people; (Camel-herding nomads particularly attached to their camel).

We set up camp, enjoy the evening sunset at the edge of the desert, or watch a gabbra performance in the evening (optional cost) (windy evening).

Day 7:  Kalacha to Marsabit

Arising to a glorious sunrise; our journey continues into the Chalbi and Kaisut Deserts passing the occasional camel herder as we depart towards Marsabit. This is an astonishingly cool, green and hilly oasis rising high above the dry heat of the surrounding desert lands. We visit one of the large craters on the foothills which are locally known as ‘Gof Redo’. Lunch en route before proceeding towards the amazing Lake Paradise (road permitting) and you may also visit the Marsabit lodge looking out for buffalo and bushbuck in the far distance. Overnight camping at the base of Marsabit (cold and misty night).

Day 8: Marsabit to Samburu

Break camp after breakfast and visit Marsabit town where you may explore briefly on foot. We then head south again along the Trans-African highway towards tarmac roads and Samburu game reserve. Arrive Samburu and enjoy an afternoon game drive en route to the campsite. Accommodation will be in our semi-permanent campsite beautifully set under a canopy of trees or pitch tents on the edge of Uaso Nyiro River (meaning Brown in Samburu language). Cold showers are available which are amazingly refreshing in the hot, dusty climate.Animals to look out for include the uncommon Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk antelope standing on hind legs to feed, lion, Somali ostriches with distinct blue legs and the shy Oryx. Elephant and crocodile are also sighted along the river bed.

Day 9:  Samburu to Mt Kenya
